Going much lighter usually means sanding the old finish and colour back first, which adds labour. The natural colour of your timber also influences the final result, so a stain looks different on merbau than on treated pine. We can apply a test patch so you see the actual outcome on your boards before we commit the whole deck.

Dense hardwoods such as merbau, spotted gum and blackbutt often benefit from a short weathering period so the surface can take the finish, and tannin-rich timbers may need cleaning to manage bleed first. Leaving new timber completely bare for too long, though, lets our strong UV start greying it. We usually advise finishing within the first few months and will give you a timeframe suited to your species. Getting the first coat on at the right time sets the deck up for easier upkeep later.

Yes, but the product choice matters around a pool, where splashing, chlorine, sunscreen and constant wet bare feet test any finish. We use stains and sealers suited to high-moisture, high-traffic areas and can discuss slip resistance for the boards underfoot. We finish the deck up to and around the pool barrier without altering or certifying the pool fence itself, which stays the pool-fencer's and certifier's job under AS1926.1. Expect poolside finishes to need recoating a little more often than a quieter deck.

A pigmented stain evens out colour and hides a lot of light weathering and minor patchiness, which is one of its advantages over a clear oil. It will not, however, hide deep cracks, cupping, splinters or damaged boards, and staining over a poorly prepared surface can look blotchy.
